With the Open House firing up this week, I wanted to start the game off with a bit of light R&R, a chance for everyone to start getting a feel for their character and each other's characters before I threw you all into the thick of combat. Of course, no one is obligated to leave the Moon Base for a trip back home -- but since there's only one more trip back to Earth on the official schedule before you all head for the other side of the galaxy, odds are you'll take this opportunity if your character has anything or anyone back on Earth.

------

For almost two years the UEEF had trained ten separate units for the purpose of conducting exploration in the portion of the galaxy ruled by the Robotech Masters. While some were charged with the mission of locating the lost First Contact Fleet, Unit Theta, assigned to the UE vessel Southern Cross was being sent across the galaxy to perform vital reconnaissance, as the data on that portion of the galaxy, provided by friendly Zentraedi, was years if not decades out of date.

Unit Theta has six months of training left before its two years were complete, and they had just completed the Tirolian portion of their training. Theta had been granted a two week leave, and the shuttle off of Moon Base Aluce back to Australia is scheduled to depart in exactly one hour. Your final debriefing is complete, and you've had time to change into civies (if such is your desire) and check your luggage. Those of you heading for Earth should begin assembling near the shuttle. The rest of you, do as you would.

Begin!

Lt. Deehai will make a dutiful visit home, there to listen to J-pop, his father's rants, and consume food that will make him homesick for the messhall.

At first Vic was not too sure that a trip back before the mission would be a good thing. Homesickness being a problem of his and all...

But the opportunity to catch some waves on the Ausie beaches was just too much of a pull.

It's off to the Gold Coast!

During the painfully long flight to Brazil, Lt. Cervantez passes the time by skimming through the holovid of his last leave. It's been a long six months, seperated from his new wife. She had done her best to keep him up to date on their new family as their child grew within her, but each update and sonogram (sp?) only reminded him what he was missing.

A slight blush came over him as he flipped to the last picture she had sent him, "to keep you from freezing in your bed" read the caption of the cheesecake pic.

She still hasn't gotten the hang of human euphemisms yet.

Though very much pregnant in the pic, she retained her fine features and seeming delicatness. As is often the case, looks can be deceiving and if the messages she had left him on his comm were to be of any indication, the rigourous hand to hand and endurance training he had undergone would be invaluable this leave.

*basically I'm jumped by my very preggers wife who has hit that disturbing point where her hormones are going at light speeds. We'll spare the gory details for the benefit of our psyches*

Major Welkin finished up his briefings with the higher ups on the status of Theta. As the team prepared to go on leave he made sure to distribute his emergency contact number, and instructions to call him in the event of any problem, to the team. He made sure his final words carried a suitable threat before dismissing them; "Failure to be on the ship at the end of leave would be an immediate court martial. Do try to remember you are representing the finest the UEEF has to offer, lads. Your improprieties reflect on all of us and I will be damned if any of you die not facing the enemy because you got stupid on a break."

Afterwards, he embarked on the shuttle to Australia in full dress uniform carrying with him enough personal effects for a week. His goals being to spend his time in the unravaged sections of the world to remind himself of what he's fighting for and of course chasing what fighting's worth.

Checking his itinerary, Welkin looked over his destinations: first Australia for a bit of wine, women, and song...then Japan for a second course with an ethnic appeal. For a moment he thought about visiting home, but England quickly left his mind when he reminded himself that home meant inevitably seeing his sister and her damnable mixed mutt of a husband. No, there'd be none of that mess.

Shin heads home to visit family and friends. His mother fusses over him the whole time he is there. Sure that he is not eating enough or sleeping enough.

A weekend of quiet walks around the city to remind himself of the people he has sworn to protect.

at one point I take a ride down to barrens of Rio, slowing driving up and down the dark streets, searching for a familiar face, that of my sister.

I don't really know why I do this, I haven't seen her in years and I'm not even sure she's alive, but she's the only blood I've got and I feel the need to tell her I'm leaving and that I may not make it back. I want to tell her so many things, but the that night, I can't find her, not among the teeming masses of streetwalkers and johns.

Three days into leave, and then things get strange.

Wherever you are, whatever you're doing, between 0100 and 0115 Tokyo time a pair of Shadow AJACs make contact with you. Even those of you who took effort to shed any possible tracking devices are found as easily as the rest. Perhaps there's more to that new cyber-armor than you'd been told.

Three days into leave, and you all find yourself with the remainder of your leave canceled. You were at least given ten minutes to say whatever goodbyes you needed to make.

----

Moon Base Aluce is one of the most advanced cities under human control in the universe. Life is relatively easy, even when you're part of an elite unit enduring some of the most strenuous training in the UEEF. Food is diverse and well prepared, there are creature comforts aplenty, and the beds almost don't feel like sleeping on concrete sprinkled with broken glass.

Despite all that, God you guys are tired of this place. The observant members of Theta will notice the Zentraedi destroyer in orbit over Aluce. The exterior damage of the ship indicate recent action - heavy recent action.

----

"Men, for years we've been aware that there was more to the Invid than the Scouts and Shock Troopers that compromise the bulk of their army. However, none of us were prepared for this." Training was over. A Zentraedi Highlord, the probable captain of the destroyer, and Base Commander Sato were present along with a half dozen of the highest ranking members of Aluce command. Sato himself was briefing Theta.

A body, hidden by a sheet, was brought into the center of the room. "This," Sato pulled the sheet down as he spoke, revealing her face "is Lieutenant June Davis, assigned to the Destroyer Integrity".

A quiet chill ran through you all, as the Integrity had been part of the lost First Contact Fleet.

"However, it is also not Lieutenant June Davis, at least it isn't if there's a merciful God." Sato pulled the sheet further down, revealing a hole in her chest and abdomen -- a hole that exposed inhuman organs and green blood.

"This...thing...was apparently leading an entire attack force of Scouts and Shock Troopers that engaged part of our Zentraedi border fleet. All pertinent data will be provided to you and the rest of the crew of the Southern Cross. What is most puzzling is that the mecha that this body was recovered in used our coordinate system for interstellar navigation. We can even read the data on it without performing difficult conversion. Three locations were salvageable, three uncharted sections of space that this mecha had been to prior to combating our fleet." With a nod, the body is wheeled out of the room - off for extensive study, no doubt.

"I am unwilling to risk dispatching capital ships to those locations, but it is vital that we learn as much as we can about them, as quickly as we can. Of all our units in training, Theta is the most prepared and fully staffed available unit. As such, you all are to leave Aluce within the next twelve hours to travel to these coordinates and to gather all possible intel. Any questions?"

Thank the Masters. I was about to strangle someone. However, I am going to make a note to search my armor for signals.

Deehai raises his hand. "I assume it was looked into, but does that's" he gestures to the corpse "DNA match the samples on file for the Lieutenant?"

Shin barely hears the rest of the conversation once the body is revealed. Busy concentrating on the wound and what would have caused such damage. Not to mention the irregular biology of the supposed Lieutenant.

Shin is abruptly pulled from his train of thought as the body is wheeled away.

"Sir, I'd like to be on hand to examine the body. Sometimes these guys aren't as...meticulous...as they should be."

Vic for a moment appears as if he might be ill. His face changes to three shades of green within a few seconds of the body being exposed.

"Awww, c'mon. You didn't have to show me that. Jeezus. 'We found a gross corpse,' would have been all I needed to know."

*gag*

*Turns to Major Welkin*

"Major, unless there is something I need to know about how these things die, permission to prep the ship's mechs for departure, Sir."

already too familiar with death in all its various forms, Marko doesn't flinch when the body is revealed.

almost as an after thought he mentions
"I wonder how many have already made it farther in?" as he leans slightly in over the body before it is carted off

once the body is removed I reposistion myself at ease and await orders from Command

Welkin looks over the body for a moment, noting what he can about the body's differences but mainly noticing how close they got the look of a human down. Upon hearing Victor he nods and looks at him.

"It doesn't appear that these...imitations...differ tremendously from us, so I imagine that anything that will bring us down will do likewise for them, Lieutenant. Permission granted and I want a status report on our all our mecha once they're loaded up. Lieutenant Deehai will go over them again once we're underway. Make sure the armory is also fully accounted for and we have the appropriate gear then pack up everything you need and triple check. We're not coming back for lost mementos."

This part goes after the Deehai gets an answer

He rubs his chin slightly and looks at his team before addressing Commander Sato.

"Sir, I would like Lieutenant Natsuki to be able to go over the body for a moment if possible. I am also safe to assume that full details of the autopsy and whatever contact reports we have from this will be available to me before we depart Earth orbit, correct?"

I rearranged the order of events from how you all posted, and I'll continue to do that to make things flow best. Just a heads up. Very Happy

On a second look, what really should disturb you is that it isn't close -- from the outside, there's no obvious difference between this and a human. Not even the distinctions (aside from radical hair colors) you can use to distinguish a Tirolian or Zentraedi or Zent half-breed from a human. If not for the innards and blood, your well trained eye would have no reason to doubt that this wasn't a human body.

The wound is what is scientifically known as Mecha Shrapnelitis. A chunk of outer armor going inward due to a particle beam blast or missile attack, penetrating whatever type of pilot's compartment this thing had (as of now no one has shown you all any visuals of the Mecha this thing was in) and also blasting clean through the pilot as well. For the body to have survived, and presumably along with it the Mecha, odds are this creature was defeated by a Zentraedi Female Power Armor pilot. Few other Zentraedi possess the necessary precision to make a trophy out of their foes.

The commander ignore his after thought of a question, though the look on his face indicates he's wondering the same thing.

An aside, the Southern Cross is far too large a ship for you all to be responsible for it as well as your actual missions. It comes with its own crew -- and while it is fully expected that you all will make certain that your gear and Mecha are the way you want them, I just wanted to take this opportunity to mention that the ship has a crew.

"It is a partial match." Sato obviously knows more than he's telling, or perhaps he simply doesn't have enough information yet to give a better answer.

"You may perform a visual inspection, but the full examination and autopsy will be performed once the body has been shipped back to Earth. Dr. Lang himself insisted. The necessary data will all be provided, Major, though I doubt the autopsy data will be available before you all fold out. Dr. Natsuki, with me. The rest of you are dismissed. Godspeed."

Mav, in your next post let's advance up to you being cleaned and fully prepped -- go ahead and rattle off a decent list of the things you're looking for, don't worry about being too technical if you don't want to be, however.

At some point after the intial departure prep Vic finds a moment to pull Major Welkin aside.

"Sir, I know I can sometimes seem reckless, and I know for a man of my occupation that can be a survival hazard. But, sir...

*Vic pauses as if collecting his thoughts. An unaccustomed look of concern on his face.*

"Sir, it just that even when I am not actively trying to hide my tracks, I'm not the kind of person that is caught off his guard. Sir, they didn't just find me. They found me on a sand bar in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef forty miles off shore, and the only person who knew I was there, was with me."

*Again he pauses. He appears for a moment unsure as if to continue.*

"I trust high command. I do. But, sir, that thing looked human, and if it could infiltrate one of our ships, why could it not infiltrate Earth Command? Look, whatever we find out there, I think we might come into a situation where we want to disappear for a while, and given how easily they were able to track us, maybe we should look into trying to, well, to remedy that. Sir."

"Permission to approach the corpse, sir? I know something of xenology, and wish to perform a non-invasive, non-destructive experiment."

(If Deehai gets permission, he'll get up there, look at the wound and such dutifully, then Object Reads the corpse.)

Shin approaches the body, frowning behind his surgical mask. Without being able to form any tests of his own, he'll just have to wait for results like everyone else. Damn.

In any case, Shin begins his visual inspection, complaining under his breath.

Checking for any distinguishable marks. Moles, scars, tattoos, etc.
Examining the remaining organs. Perhaps they are at least analogous to human or known Xenos organs. Which may prove difficult considering the damage.
Guess at how long "she" has been dead. (or do we know that already?)

going in reverse order...
Your files will provide a timeline and even a video feet of the battle in which she was killed, however between the Cold Storage she's been in and the slight distortions in time Folding has on a body, you wouldn't trust any guess as to how long she's been dead. Recent enough that there's no extensive signs of decomp, but again, cold storage.

Without cutting her open, which you can't do, you can't make any major guesses. She appears to have had a fully functional spinal column, and There's what appears to be the remnants of an Invid digestive system -- at least it looks similar to what you've personally seen in autopsies of Shock Troopers and Scouts. But it also bears significant resemblance to a human system as well. And you'd stake your reputation that, underneath all the gore, those are ovaries.

Any attempts at a physical examination has you pushed away however, gently, by the men hovering over the body. No physical examination of the organs is being allowed. At this point your eyes pick up on something new as well -- you hadn't noticed it till you got right up on the body, but there's a low level forcefield surrounding it. Though forcefields have been incorporated into the larger Mecha of your Theta, this is the smallest field you've ever seen -- and you've never heard of one so portable before.

Otherwise there are no distinguishing marks, but then again, you're only seeing about 20% of her body, and none of it is where a woman tends to leave tattoos.

EDIT: Deehai looks like he's about to say something, then stops, and stares very hard at the corpse, like he's trying to figure it out... but he's staying a good distance away while doing so.

Obviously you won't have exact model numbers or names for stuff, but please give me basic outlines of equipment requests for the upcoming voyage.

Also, there will be three large Mecha assigned to each of you -- for those who can pilot multiple mecha, please post here the numbers you'll be allocating. This does not include Cyclones. You'll all have two extra cyclones beyond the ones that come by default in your Mecha, for those who will be using Cyclones. The Marines will all also be using Cyclones, so in a pinch a loaner can be made. There will be a decent inventory of spare parts as well, for repairs of your Mecha. The supplies aren't inexhaustible, but you all should be covered for a while (originally, this was why I had wanted everyone to pilot Alphas, to make repairs easier to manage...but such is life).
