Stone patches what little data his thermal imagers recorded before the subjects vanished to the rest of the unit
"They could have activated some form of thermal dampners or sensor spoofers, it's pretty thick down here and lots of places to hide."
I give one more sweep of the immediate area, suspecting guerilla style tactics, I'll double up on sweeps for any traps or mines (trip wires, magnetic anamolies, pitts, netting in the low branches, etc...) and then will head skyside again to rejoin the rest

Humanoid is about all you pick up from the thermals. Too small for Shock Troopers, wrong body design for Scouts. Too fast to be Tirolians in Exterminator armor.
You jump at shadows a couple of times in your sweep, but no traps seems visible. There's tracks, but you'd have to get into a cyclone to have any hopes of following them.
Otherwise, back up in the sky you go! |

Assume we have not lost the element of surprise but watch your sensors for any kind of activity or openings in that damnable forest canopy."
Welkin switches to the main squadron frequency to speak to all pilots
"This is Ares; Starscream, we have had enemy contact but are continuing en route to your position. Report your current status and the status of the landing zone." |
