((My apologies for delaying the game. It was an ass thing to do and I hate the idea that I'm holding people up.))

Upon the Southern Cross' exit from the space fold, the ship finds itself outside the orbit of a very obviously Invid-inhabited planet. Fortunately the ship entered undetected and allowed for preliminary scans of Invid ships in space as well as patrol patterns. Further examination showed the planet to have four main continents, as well as led to the discovery of a massive Invid hive located on one of the continents...a hive large enough to be visible from space (much like how the Great Wall of China can be seen from Earth's orbit). After monitoring the Invid while remaining at high alert status, the lack of detection on the Invid's part displayed a window of entry to the planet's surface.

All members of Theta were ordered to their mecha and to bring their field equipment (if you plan on bringing anything you feel needs mentioning, do so in your posts following this) in order to exploit a hole in the Invid patrol pattern. Prior to launch, all mecha had both the location of the massive hive, as well as an emergency rendezvous point 100 miles to the west of the hive in case enemy contact forces a team member to put down. The orders to the team are exploit the window, enter the atmosphere over the 2nd continent, and fly low (Not NOE, just between 2000-4000 ft) to avoid air patrols or ground detection units given the apparent lax in Invid security. All mecha are approaching the hive's continent from the west coast

"Alright men, we are approaching the main continent. I want a tight formation and drop to 1000 ft; if we're going to give off a radar signature, I want it to be a singular large one in order to maximize what surprise we'd have left. Rely on passive sensor detection and drop to subsonic speeds. The goal is to make it to the rendezvous point and land so we can reconnoiter the area. I am now open to suggestions, gentlemen...."

"Dazzle me."

"What is our objective in this drop, sir?"

"Recon, espionage, S&D, delivering a housewarming gift?"

((also, because it has to be said;
"Nuke them from orbit, it's the only way to be sure"))

"Roger. Linking you with my sensors now."

Deehai hooks everyone up to his sensor grid. One of the great things about the Invid is that they don't use things like radar or jamming... while they can communicate telepathically a lot faster than we can by talking, they at least don't jam very much.

A few minutes after Kato has taken off from the Southern Cross he warns the rest of Theta "I'm getting some unexpected resistance here, Gravity on this world must be a bit more intense than back on Earth. This could get rocky, if we run across an Invid patrol."

Before everyone takes off however (my bad Al, I should've remembered to cover this with you ahead of time). Captain Oginski took Major Welkin aside before the Major left for his Valkyrie. "Will you be taking your entire unit, or will an escort remain behind for the Southern Cross? I'd rather find somewhere on the ground to land and power down, rather than keep taking my chances in the sky or in orbit."

((Assuming that Al makes me aware of the Captain's request.))

"Sir, I would like to suggest I be dropped down in advance of the main squadren so that I can provide sight recon from the ground. I'll find a place to set down the ship, and once that is accomplised I can provide ground sight confirmation of what you birds are seeing from the air."

Should that suggestion be found a good one my cyclone of choice will be the VR-038R, however should that not be availible from the Southern Cross' reserve mecha ((damn it, I new I should have requested one Razz )), I will use my VR-041H.

Mecha Specs of note (VR-041H): Mini-missle pod 1 exchanged for smoke missles. Red (1) and Blue (5). Red means I'm in trouble and marks my location for air support. Blue is a target of opportunity, so get over there and make it history. Pod 2 carries HEAP or Plasma (if availible). Everything else as standard.

Requested special equipment: Everything I need for recon is on the VR-038, however should I be taking the VR-041H, I will need a hand held optical system capable of magnification/thermal/IR/ect. Something functionally similar to the Optics Helmet in the Rifts Main Book.
Nothing Else that I can think of other than survival gear in case I am pinned down and unable to be extracted (just basic stuff like first aid, survival blankets, firestarter, ect.).

((Thinking about it, Al, you might want me to take the 041L anyway since it allows me to mark targets from over 1km away.))

Yeah, 038s are in short supply -- I think only one of the Marines even uses them, if that. BTW Jezz, you did want to bring Alphas, yes?

Depends. If I'm drop podded down in just the cyclone the likelyhood of detection would be pretty much zero. I imagine being dropped down with an Alpha would up those percentages, besides, if the Alpha was really needed, I could wait for the SC to make its nest and take one out from there.

It's a risk either way, so it's Al's call. He might decide there is no need for a ground spotter, in which case I'm in an alpha and this is all just speculation.

Oh right, I meant just in general for the overall campaign -- you didn't list any on your three mecha you want to bring list, at least to the best of my memory.

Oh, I thought that Alpha and Cyclone was standard to everyone, and since the only other "special" mecha I wanted was the 050 multi configurable, its the only one I listed.

Sorry.

So yea, I have the 041L, an Alpha, and an 057 with "T" and "F" configs in reserve.

((No worries about the changes. Here's the modified order then. All of Theta launches but Lieutenants Kato and Szcnagacki will exploit the aforementioned window with the Invid and advance carefully to the rendezvous point. The rest of Theta will accompany the Southern Cross planetside and provide an emergency fighter screen. Kato's orders are to provide cover for Szcnagacki (as the two of them will be isolated from backup)and help clear a landing sight for the rest of the team who will head for the rendezvous point once the Southern Cross makes a safe landing.))

Southern Cross, this is Major Welkin. We will be providing fighter cover until you make planetfall. If our scans show no sign of Invid detection or interception my team will head for the rendezvous point to begin reconnaissance as discussed. I trust the Marine compliment will be able to properly camo and guard the Cross in our absence.

Please confirm, Southern Cross.

Looking at his readout he switches to a secure frequency and checks with the team to assign priorities

Alright men, here's the plan once we commence the operation.

Lieutenant Deehai, you will unload what emergency tools you feel will be needed in case of damage from enemy contact. We're not going to be down there long, so only the most necessary.

Lieutenant Cervantes, you are on sentry duty. I want your eyes on the skies. You will be our first line of defense if things go all to pot and we must scramble.

Lieutenant Natsuki, ensure you are ready to close up anything from a gash to a sucking chest wound then assist in camp preparation.

Lieutenant Smith will prepare camp security "measures" to ensure a right messy alert should the Invid have ground patrols.'

Lieutenantss Szcnagacki and Mistubishi will have our meeting point clean and swept before we arrive and will assist in making it a right and proper camp.

Understand this, gentlemen: we don't know what they have or what they're doing. This will change within 24 hours. Regular recon teams can sneak in close enough to tell HQ what the enemy is eating for supper. I expect Theta to be able to tell them how it tastes.

With Szcnagacki and Mitsubishi departing immediately, I'll assume that Smith's Alpha and Deehai's Beta will synch up. Since Smith will probably be morphing into a character played by Nova in the next 72 odd hours, I'll leave the driving up to you, for now, Nexx.

One of the comm officers of the Southern Cross confirms your plan, Al. Despite your months of training, none of you can still tell the two comm officers apart by voice alone; Of course, they are two of the few full blooded Tirolians any of you have ever met.

Captain Oginski then breaks across the channel, "Remember Major, Invid orbital coverage over the Hive was far too heavy for us to even think about sending in a relay or two. By my estimates, once you've crossed the halfway points of the next continent, we'll lose conventional communications with you all. In Thirty-Six hours we'll make a play for the ocean and attempt to regain communication. Captain Oginkski, out."

After about twenty minutes of endless, dense tree coverage that looks straight out of a Brazilian rain forest, a clearing that appears to have occurred naturally, instead of due to Invid efforts, is found. The Southern Cross sets down in it and the Haz-Mat team and Marines begin immediately working on providing adequate coverage so that the rest of Theta can depart.

At which point Lieutenant Mitsubishi contacts the rest of the unit.

"Major Welkin, I'm picking up a faint distress beacon -- a UEEF distress beacon." At this stage Mitsubishi and Szcnagacki wouldn't have even left the initial continent yet. "Should we investigate?"

"Negative at this time. Your task is unchanged; proceed to the rendezvous point and ensure its safety for the rest of the team. I will not have our team going off course in the middle of a designated mission. When we are safe and secure on the ground we can evaluate the new variables."

"Acknowledged." Once the comm is turned off, muttering to myself "Poor bastards are probably long since dead anyway, Invid are just too stupid to turn the damned beacon off."

"Confirmed."

Quick, private channel to Lt. Natsuki, cutting in the Major and the Captain's comm officer. "I'm already set up in Theta bay, Natsuki; you want them to haul damaged carcasses there, too, or reroute those with organic damage somewhere else?"

(Quick note: Deehai is meticulous about the "everything in its place" stuff... the problem is, his system is pretty bizarre, and partially based on Zent/Tirolian organization. So everything is already mag-plated where he needs it in Theta bay.)

(GM Aside -- There is a med bay -- does anyone have any suggestions on a good free program to do spaceship designs with? I was thinking about how I needed to get a layout up while watching Star Trek, but short of drawing one by hand and scanning it up, I don't have a good alternative.)

OK, time to get down to it.

First, For the advance duo.

Your trip across the landing continent was relatively uneventful. Well, aside from the simple majesty of being on an alien world that supports life. All the training on the Moon never really prepared you for the sense of wonder that such a sight is filling you with, despite the danger you're both in. With that said, things radically change as you leave land behind and begin to speed across the ocean. You've got the radar range on them, but your sensors are definitely picking up Invid activity -- lots and lots of Invid activity.

Now, for the Secondary force. Once you've gotten the Southern Cross squared away and begin the trek to rendezvous with the rest of Theta, roughly an hour passes when you realize that you're being fired upon. You all are going fast enough that the blasts aren't coming anywhere near you -- but the fact remains there's things firing at you from inside the jungle beneath you.

Jester, since you've got rank over Bones, you get to tell your c/o about the massive number of Invid roaming the ocean.

If that includes Genius, he's going to be scanning the area; radar, but also IR.

Incidentally, have you heard of Schlock Mercenary's "Telescope of Doom"?

Nah -- I burned out on Schlock the better part of six or seven years ago. Do tell.

The attacks are definitely coming from below, so radar's a bust thanks to the hyper dense jungle you're flying over. Infrared, on the other hand, lights up like a Christmas tree. There's life down there...lots n lots of life.

*Fumbles around trying to setup a secure frequency*

*Remember's Invid rarely if ever monitor radio transmissions*

*facepalm*

"Recon-1 reporting in."

"We're definately in the middle of a hornets nest out here. Our current location is still well off the beaten path and the equipment literally can't keep up with all the activity. No eyes on the target yet, but if this is any indication of what we're gonna find when we get there, we are definately in uncharted waters. Despite the overwhelming numbers, I don't think they are aware of our presense yet, but shit, with these things the only way you know for sure is when they try and frag ya."

"Recon-1 out."

*flips radio to two way com*

"Hey Mit, you still getting that distress beacon? How far out of the way is it anyway?"

While waiting for orders from Major Welkin, Bones will have (and I'm assuming Jester will have done the same) transformed his Valkyrie into Guardian mode and gone into a hovering position. "From our current position, I'd say about an hour, hour and a half Northwest of us. We're just about a perfect equilateral triangle with us, the beacon, and the rest of Theta."

"Hmm, okay, we're going to split the difference and so long as Theta doesn't call us in for support, let's check out that beacon. I know its likely nothing, but I just can't leave someone out there no matter how small the chance. Besides, recon detours happen all the time. Ya get me?"

*Transforms into fighter mode*

"Let's punch it."

(I'm a little lost here. Too new to the whole PBP thing maybe. Could someone sum up what is going on. I'm glad Marrow posted the rundown of everyone's name and class, because I was having an even worse time before that.)
