"I know you will, Princess." Carlin's hand reaches out for you, warmly, but before it makes contact there is a knock at the door. The quick flinch of Carlin's neck warns you that he was expecting no such interruption. Without saying a word, he simply steps once towards the door and shimmers out of reality. |

Carlin steps back into reality, a few moments after he departed. "Princess Tian, it appears one of the Blood has lost his way, and his guardian, and has found your door. Shall I allow him to enter?" |

Guardian? That meant someone like her, new to this place. It could be another Brutus. Or it could be an ally and Tian had precious few of those here. "Let me get dressed first, then show him in."
As Carlin nodded assent, Tian quickly stepped into her dressing room and selected another dress, this one in dark yellow with crimson trim. She bound up her hair again in the simple figure eight she could manage alone and made sure she had a matching fan tucked into her sash this time. It was the fastest she'd ever gotten ready since...Well, since her family sent her to Xian. "I'm ready!" She called checking herself in the mirror one last time. |

Once Tian informs Carlin that she is ready, with a wave of his hand, the doors to the outside hallway open wide. |

standing before the doorway is a tall man, wearing what appears to be a leather coat of some sort. His skin is white, his hair black and just "mussed" enough to look deliberate. He is currently looking up and to the right of the now open doorway as if examining a bit of architecture or painting that lines the hallway. A few brief moments pass before he notices the door is now open.
"Oh, pardon me...sees that the lady of the room appears chinese and then switches into Mandarin...Many pardons my lady, I have become a bit lost in this palace and was hoping, your...servant could point me in the right direction. I am sorry if I am intruding." _________________ So's Your Face! |

Finally! Someone who spoke the language of court! But his accent was strange and some words unfamiliar. And what had she been speaking before then? Tian would have to consider it later. For now, she treated her guest to a slow smile. "No. No intrusion, sir." She gestured to the chair next to hers. "I haven't found much in the way of civilized conversation here yet. I would be honored if you could join me." |

The stranger looks to the offered chair for a moment, silently judging the situation and remembering the last time a lady, such as the one seated before him, offered him something.
"Thank you." he replies to her while moving across the room to the offered seat. With a barely surpressed grunt, he lowers himself into the chair, and though trying to hide it, one can tell he is walking wounded.
"My name is Caleb, "Detective" Caleb Savage, or at least I once was. Thank you for your hospitality, you are most kind."
"I don't suppose that you are new here yourself?" _________________ So's Your Face! |

"I am, Detective." Tian said his odd honorific awkwardly. "I awoke here this morning after falling asleep in my homeland. There was powerful sorcery at work, I think."
She gestured at the tea pot, still half full. "You've found me at the end of my mid day meal. There is still tea, if you'll allow me to pour." |

"Why thank you, I would like that."
Caleb watches calmly as she pours and serves the tea, noting her practiced hand at the seemingly simple matter.
"So you just woke up here? No endless staircases or Chaney's? I guess I should have had your travel agent." _________________ So's Your Face! |

"There were...events before my departure." Tian said, handing the Detective his cup. "They were not pleasant." She took a sip of her own cup. "But let us speak of something else. You say you are 'Detective'? What does that mean?" |

"Sorry, you may be more familiar with Prefect. My job is to help people, investigate crimes and bring the guilty to justice. Well at least that was my job before...all this." This last bit is emphasized by a motion of his hand to their surroundings.
"My I have the honor of your name, Lady..." _________________ So's Your Face! |

"Ah!" Tian brightened "I understand now. And forgive my lack of manners. I should have introduced myself properly. I am Tian." She left off her family name deliberately. She wasn't quite sure how she felt about their deaths yet. Mourning would be proper, yet there were so many mysteries to unravel here. To put herself in seclusion for weeks would mean she might never discover the answers. It was better to simply refrain from mentioning them.
"Tell me about being a Detective. What sort of crimes do you investigate?" This man was far more mannered than Brutus had been. She hoped he had interesting stories. |

"Well... here he pauses, as if unsure what to share with the stranger, pleasant though she may be ...all sorts really, thefts, kidnappings, murder, extortion. If you can think of it, I've probably handled a case about it."
"Many of them aren't fit for retelling in polite company, it is very rarely pleasant work, but I did have this one case a few years back I recall. Involved a kidnapping by the father. The parents were estranged and during a weekend the father up and took his little girl. The poor mother found me on the shortly after and hired me to bring her precious girl back. I crossed 12 states tracking him down, all the way to the Grand Canyon...um, sorry, a famous canyon in my country. I found them in a little cabin station overlooking the vista, as he was showing his daughter the breath-taking view.
Normally, scum like that would get a quick handling, cuffing...err, restraining and the little girl would be back with her mother by nightfall, but this one has a better ending.
Turns out the father was dying of an illness, something called a cancer, by the docs. He just wanted to show his girl this great land of ours with what little time he had left. Now I've heard all manner of stories from all manner of people in my line of work, but I could tell this guy was sincere. So I let him have his time with his daughter, even convinced the mother to come out and enjoy one last week as a family together. A while later, I received a letter in the mail from the mother, telling me her husband had passed and that she was grateful for my handling of the matter, the daughter even drew me a picture, still have it filed away back in my office...though I guess I'll never see that place again." _________________ So's Your Face! |

"You seem like a very compassionate man." Tian said, sipping her tea. Men always did like to tell stories about themselves. But what was this nonsense about a father kidnapping his own daughter? She didn't see how such a thing was even possible. Still, his company was not unpleasant. "Have you traveled much for your work?" |

"Very much so, my job necessitates that I travel abroad from time to time. From your native China... shakes head ...I'm sorry, I assume you are from China, but I suppose things are no longer what they appear. Where is your home?" _________________ So's Your Face! |

She smiled "My homeland is the Middle Kingdom. I do not know this China of which you speak. But tell me more about your travels. What is 'The Great Canyon'?" Tian deflected the conversation back to Caleb. |

"I was born in the Yin Shan province, at the foot of the Lang Shan mountains." She took another sip of tea. "In the north. What about you?" |

"No." She shook her head. "I know there are others like us here, strangers. And I know we are to meet the King of this place soon. But no one will tell me anything." Tian allowed a tiny bit of frustration to show in her voice. |

"I think we all feel that way, I know my...benefactor here Caleb tones and demeanor becomes almost melancholy, was less than forthcoming with all the whys, though I believe she had my best interests in heart, considering."
"Do you know anything about a person, or maybe a group known as Chaos? They or it, seem behind our quick "rescues", or the motivation to bring us here." _________________ So's Your Face! |

"There was...", She paused to consider how to answer. "A woman. Or what appeared to be a woman. She is dead now." Tian looked directly at Caleb. "Did something...strange happen on your journey here?" |

"To put it mildly. I've seen things these past few...days? Hours? Honestly I'm not sure which, that I thought only existed in fairy tales or horror stories."
Here Caleb sets down his tea cup, and upon resting back into his chair looks out the window into the blue expanse of the sky.
"I've had run ins with the occult, but nothing on this scale." _________________ So's Your Face! |

"The same has happened to me. I've seen...impossible things." She balanced her tea cup delicately on her fingertips. "And there has been no explanation for any of it." |
