Shepard smiles grimly for a second, but it quickly melts into a wolf's grin.

"Bones, bring them home. Me and Doc will meet you on an intercept course."

"Doc, bring your machine up to full speed. We're going to close at super-sonic, then slow and break to engage..."

"It's time to have a little fun, boys and girls..."

"Copy that. I'm right behind you."

((so if there are none behind him, what is he so worried about? Wink ))

Which mode are you two entering combat in? And working with the simple numbering system of Invid 1-9, what order are you working in for attack patterns?

Shepard was furiously at work setting up a firing pattern, as at super-sonic speeds in the combined Legios plane mode, he was confirming radar signatures scant seconds before he would be coming within firing range...

((i.e. If we're not in jet mode at super-sonic speeds, I think we're both pancakes! Wink ))

((question: In Phase World, you can fire off a spread of missiles (at least 10) in FoF mode, and the GM rolls 1d4 missiles for each target, or until the missile count gets below 30%. Do you use this rule, Marrow?

Elsewise, how many targets can I lock in before we get into firing range?))

it was more the "slow and break to engage" part. I figured you were getting there in jet mode. :p

Shadow Chronicles the RPG seems pretty set on its one at a time method, while Shadow Chronicles the game showed at least eight getting aced at once by the elite daughter of the Sterlings. Of course, she was in a heavily modified Alpha.

Regardless, and while reserving the right to change my mind later, let's say the systems are designed to queue up three targets at once for a missile spread (I'll stick with the 1d4 method you mentioned above for dividing up where the missiles go. A lil randomness is good for the soul). With that said, I will say now (since this is the first time it's come up) that I am no believer in the "fire four and you auto hit" policy. Don't worry, this will work heavily in y'alls benefit once you're fighting Zentraedi. So, with that said, pick your missile totals carefully.

Clarify strategy: We pass at supersonic speeds, firing off missiles (which may not be able to keep up that speed, but luckily due to the Laws of Physics, launch off fast enough that we don't collide with our own missiles). After the first salvo, we slow, break formation, and take targets of opportunity.

((Or as I like to call it: "Thin the herd, pop off the stranglers."))

"Inbound, targetting the three stragglers. Locked on! Fox Eight!"

From the Alpha's reserves, a volley of 8 SRM's fly out, seeking targets in FoF profile...

Destiny follows Shepard's lead, locking on to the invid furthest back and firing a spread of 8 SRMs.

"Missiles away!"

After speeding past the Invid formation Destiny shifts to Battleoid mode, to turn and open fire with IWS-40 40mm Ion Pulse Weapon Pods at the nearest remaining enemy.

(Mav, I sent you the AJAC specs right? I thought I did but can't seem to find the private message.)

Those last three Invid are in for a bad day.

We'll call them Larry, Moe, and Curly.

Larry took a pair of missiles from both Shepard and Doc Destiny, (and rolled a 1 to dodge Doc's near auto-miss roll), and died an explosive and gooey death.

Moe is apparently a God amongst Invid, neutralizing eight missiles between the two of you, continuing on without a scratch.

Curly was burninated by Shepard's final two missiles before Doc Destiny's pair even impacted on the final straggler.

Moe was a god with missiles, but a pair of well placed Ion blasts from Doc Destiny tore through his propulsion system with ease, and Moe exploded like a mosquito that'd sucked the blood from a fool full of hot sauce.

The attack caused hesitation amongst the ranks of the remaining Six Invid, while three continued on after Bones, the other three turned and burned, heading right towards Doc Destiny and Shepard. Annihilation Discs are a flying your way, gentlemen. Actions?

Query Self-Friend, Marrowlight. What is an "Annihilation Disc" exactly?

Sorry, used a lil robotech-speak there. Invid, for the most part, instead of using lasers or firing continuous beams of energy, fire streams of plasma blobs that come out in the shape of frisbees. Imagine a pair of shoulder mounted high velocity skeet shooters, only the skeets inflict mdc by the x10.

So I take it they cannot be shot down and you have to just dodge them?

Pretty much yeah. Dodge, or once your forcefield is gone, parry with your arm shields.

Shepard grunts in pain, as he forces himself through several hard-g accelerations, looking to avoid not only the enemy fire, but also to put him on a pursuit course with Bones...

"Doc, see if you can mark off a few of these slugs on my six! I'm engaging Bones' stragglers, since his shield is probably weaker than either of ours by now...

Shepard's hands fly across the narrow cockpit, as he seeks not only to use the incredible thrust of the Beta to catch up to Bones' pursuers, but also fly evasively, all while setting up for another FoF volley of 8...

(which I'll fire off, if I get tone)

I'm being a lil brain freezy on Robotech tonight, expect the post update for this to either come very randomly, or tomorrow.

Destiny attempts to avoid all the destructo discs.

((I wanted to wait to see what the Invids did in response to Shepard's rapid acceleration past them again.))

Before Shepard's gotten himself out of position and exposed his own six, Bones will fire over the comm "These three I can handle, you two divvy up those last three." And then Bones kills his engines dead, while shifting into Guardian mode!

Will post update once Shepard's had time to react to Bones's transmission. Doc Destiny, all three Invid are momentarily hesitant as they debate between you and Shepard. A perfect chance to strike!

Shepard realizes if he continues forward, he'll be in Bones' line of fire; and if he slows down, the Invid behind him will catch up...

So Shepard, pulls the stick up, hits the juice, and streaks upward!

"Fire away Doc! I'm all clear!"

With that (and giving time for Doc's missiles to hopefully find their targets!), Shepard switches the Alpha over to Soldier mode, with the Beta still attached to the back. He then cuts power, letting the airframe stall, dropping the "nose" earthward, and let's his twin gunpods blaze at any surviving Invid below him!

(and prepares to recover from the fall, before he's in the danger zone)

(Assuming Doc Destiny kept with the theme of 8 missiles..)

Between the AJAC's missile barrage and Shepard's handgun fire, the middle three Invid are cut to pieces before they can even really engage either of you.

For the lead trio, between a volley of four missiles and a dose of fancy flying and strafing, they too are torn to bits.

Speaking of fancy flying, Shepard doesn't ever want to pull that stung again, in Atmosphere. The dead weight of a Beta is a dangerous thing when Gravity matters. But you survived it, as did the mecha.

"Thanks for the assist." Rare praise from the overconfident Zentraedi.

"Enough's enough though -- Unless Ares left orders to abandon them with either of you, it's been far too long now without contact. Time we tore the Integrity apart, along with any Invid that get in our way!"

Shepard smiles mirthlessly.

Well, at least the kid's got spunk!

"Alright, form up again team. That was likely just the welcoming wagon, and the Invid are bringing in their calvary now to clean up. I wanted to give Command a chance to contact us, but Bones' is right: they've been out of contact too long..."

"So we're going in. Expect heavy fire. We don't know if the Integrity's weapons are active, or if the Invid have made her a Trojan Horse, so stay frosty! This is a S&R (Search & Rescue) mission at this point, so watch your fire! Doc, you may have to go EVAC to tend to our missing comrades. Bones, be ready to provide him cover. Since I'm in the Legios, I'll provide air cover."

"Form up, and move out!"

Things went smoothly until the five mile mark. At five miles out from the Integrity, a literal swarm of Invid Scouts is visible, patrolling around the UEF ship. At any given moment there's at least twenty in sight, with probably a solid hundred on patrol.

Actions?

"Shepard, you're too bulky in atmosphere with that Beta strapped to your back. You cover Doc Destiny, I'll clear the way."

And while Bones waits for confirmation, his finger hovers over his stealth system, preparing to turn it off.
