I've decided to spend a brief amount of time in your home shadows. As such, I allow you to set your own initial scene. Once you've done so, I shall step in from there.

Two pink lines. Well fuck. Jesse slumped against the side of the tub. It would be at least a month before she started to show. Should be long enough to find a new job. She had been a waitress before, she supposed she could again. And not being around Bennie would make things easier...she hoped. Yeah, she definitely had to quit this time. She'd wait a few days and go to the free clinic. If she tested positive for anything they might not help her. A few days should be long enough. A week maybe. Yeah, a week would be better. And if she still tested positive, she'd cry. She'd cry and tell them...what? That her pimp had made her. Yeah, they were always ready to believe anything about a pimp. Hmm...maybe she could say that he would kill her if he found out and they would help her move. She certainly wouldn't be able to afford this apartment with waiting tables.

She wondered who the father was. God, not that old guy. Or the ugly one. Or, oh hell, Sal. Sal would kill her, his baby or not. She couldn't dance anymore, so she would be useless to him. And only hardcore freaks would want to make it with a pregnant woman. Although, she probably could charge extra. Maybe it was one of the college kids. That would be nice. A pretty baby with smarts. Oh well, it's not like any of them would care anyway. So a hooker had a baby, so what? Who was going to pay any attention. Well fine. Fuck 'em.

She would get on Medicaid and she'd stay clean for real this time. And she wouldn't lose her benefits. Not like last time. She pulled herself up, catching sight of the little white stick on the counter as she did so.

It was cold today, real cold. Jesse could feel the bit of warmth from her cigarette as she took the last drag and then dropped it to the pavement and crushed out the embers with her heel. She exhaled slowly, savoring. Not as good as H, but they weren't looking for it on a pee test either. And she'd tell them she was trying to quit. At least it took the edge off. She had stayed mostly clean for the past two weeks. None of the really bad stuff, anyway. That should be good enough.

She looked up at the friendly blue and white sign of the free clinic, and the flyer posted in the window. Pregnant? it asked. Check! Scared? Check! Need Help? Double check! Come inside for a free prenatal screening! Well, the price was right, anyway.

She pulled open the door and went inside, got the forms from the nice lady at the desk, and moved over to a tattered couch to start filling them out.
