Dark Day still occurred, and it occurred on May 7th, 2000.

The game will begin on May 7th, 2009.

Until May 7th, 2009, all of you that are Nightspawn have lived normal lives. Or as normal as anyone else has lived.

The World Trade Center attack on September Eleventh, 2001 will still have happened. I tend not to like to monkey around with that, even in my fiction.

We're going to take a small page out of our own recent history. Instead of the National Security Bureau, we'll simply call it Homeland Security. Let's also ignore all that nonsense about "secret plot of the alphabet soup agencies" and just enhance what we all have lived through. Fear and paranoia allowed Homeland Security to expand its influence, absorbing the other agencies under its umbrella. Any masses purges of personnel from the other agencies was kept quiet. Ignore anything talking about there being rogue agents that are "Enemies of Society" or anything like that. To those viewing from the outside, the American Intelligence agencies are more unified than every. The public at large has no clue if there's been a culling of the CIA, FBI, NSA (etc, etc) or not. Which means none of you have a clue, and I'm not going to talk about it further. Very Happy

Small personal quibble, I infinitely prefer Preservation Party to Preserver Party. I'll refer to it as that going forward.

We'll keep fictional President Carson in office for 2000 and 2004. I'll toss up a poll for the 2008 election. Obama, McCain, or a fictional VP from the Preservation Party.

Pay no attention to anything discussing the "Preserver Activists" and their roaming the streets like wild thugs. Pay no attention to the destruction of the National Rifle Association.

None of this is to say that horrible things aren't happening in America. They are. But they won't be so obviously coming from the government and its stooges.

Terrorists are the order of the day. There are bombings. There are mass killings. There are fires burning across America. Violent crime is up. The local police and Homeland Security are finding the terrorists, though most of them are never taken alive. And those that are vanish to Gitmo almost instantly. To date, there have been no trials.

More importantly, while Americans are feeling less safe in public, there are victories. Terrorist cells are being uncovered all the time, with the terrorists being captured and killed before they can harm any innocents. People may stay at home more, but they go to bed feeling secure in their homes, knowing that the American Government is leaving no stone unturned to protect them.

((So, with all of that said, obviously I'm shifting the tone of the world a bit. There are no terrorists, of course. Well, there are. They're just Nightspawn, and Psychics, and Mages, and Werebeasts, and Guardians, and Intelligence Operatives gone rogue, and Vampires. Lots of Vampires.

And of course, half of the time the "terrorist" activities are performed under orders from Homeland Security. Not that any of your characters know a bit of this. This part is just for you players.))

Things go bump in the night.

There's no way to hide it. I'm not going to wave my hand and say the secret has been kept for all these years. It hasn't.

The sky turned black, and monsters came from it. People don't talk about it much. Unless they're at church, or out of the public eye. Some obsess over it, and chatter on the internet. But some obsess over tentacle porn, and chatter on the internet. People who talk too loudly about the monsters on the internet tend to vanish, eventually, however. The Monsters took them, or so the stories go.

There really isn't much solid information to go around about the monsters. There are hundreds of youtube clips, floating around. But no live bodies to go with them. No monsters have stepped forward to be the voice of their people. At least none have survived trying to step forward.

Some humans have tried to confront the monsters, or so the stories go. They tend not to survive such acts. Those that do tend to be maimed, horribly. The government hunts them, to make the streets safe, and the people cheer them on.

Your kind is not a secret, but you're not considered human either. And this will only make your life all the harder.

The Nightlands, the Astral Plane, and all that goes with it are completely unknown to you all. For those with mystical studies, you've of course got all kinds of theories on the Astral Plane, but none of it comes close to the reality. Nightspawn have been exposed, but mages are far better at hiding their secrets.

For that matter, there is no distinct knowledge of the Night Lords, or their minions. Hounds and Hunters and the lot are just more monsters hunted by the government.

All of this is a familiar story across the world, though of course some nations are worse than others.

War, oddly enough, is in decline. It is intelligence agencies that hunt for terrorists across the world, not soldiers. Across the world, militaries are shrinking. Some of these soldiers are finding their way to the hot spots of the world, especially in Africa and South America as mercenaries. Most, however, are absorbed into the growing police forces of the world. Others simply enjoy generous salaries for taking early retirement. As governments are spending less on buying weaponry, there is more to throw at the former soldiers to help keep them from growing too restless.

If only these terrorist organizations could be put down, the world seems almost ready to enter a new age of peace, and even prosperity.

Keep them fat, keep them happy, keep them content. And they'll never notice as you wrap the chains around their necks.
