One thing that always bothered me was the lack of information on knockbacks. Given the nature of mega-damage and robotic/supernatural strength, it would be really nice to have some kind of math for power vs weight to determine how far something goes flying when it gets hit. Obviously, something taking a hit from a power-armor punch that deals M.D. isn't going to just sit there and only falter unless it has some kind of magical hold to the ground or is incredibly heavy.
Thoughts? |

You could try and extrapolate from the rules for throwing objects. Isn't there a table somewhere for that? |

As a personal aside, I've never played a game where players seem so unaware of the terrain and range of weapons as spells as Rifts players. I say this not to bash us all, it's just that time and time again it seems like folks just think everything is happening face to face like in a fantasy game. With that said, it doesn't surprise me that there's not a good set up for knockback.
I'm not good enough with physics to whip one up -- maybe Nexx can whisper in Phalanx's ear. |

1/2 MD inflicted from concussive effects equals distance in feet knocked back - Roll w/ punch total + PS bonus + misc. bonus depending on number of legs/stability and weight
simple and fit for a super-powered universe. _________________ So's Your Face! |

Half seems excessive, at least in some cases. I'd reduce the damage for things that are MDC by nature, as opposed to someone in a suit of armor. |

You mean you wanna throw mountains into people, like in DBZ.
God, remember the Saiyin (or however you spell that fucked up word) conversion from the old Rifts Netbook? I need to track that thing down. |

It's old. Like, I first ran across it back when I had dial up and was in high school old. |

thinking of the most ridiculous example I could think of (Elder Earth Elemental Supernatural PS 60, by the regular books anyways) 60 MD equals 30 ft. minus your resistance roll, so a normal joe can figure to be knocked back 15 to 20 feet on average. Doesn't seem like a lot does it? Well maybe full MD inflicted then, unless you really want to see people flung all over the place.
we could always do it Champions way and have a resisted PS off, difference in feet traveled or something like that, if your damage exceeds a particular threshold, come up with a bonus for concusive weapons depending on the amount of damage they inflicted.
I have a house rule like that somewhere and even a handy dandy little chart.
As for DBZ, not that it might mean much to anyone here but Nexx, but me and a buddy once played Mystic Warrior Windlings in the vein of DBZ characters, eventually even unlocking several versions of Super Saiyan and even the dance to form us into a giant (for windlings at least) conglomeration of power that saw us throw a stone barge into Sky Point and bounce back one of their Death Star beams.
good times, good times. _________________ So's Your Face! |

oops sorry to include that was in Earthdawn, an superheroic fantasy setting, that I think only Nexx here has played or knows about.
Windlings are little fairy like beings you can play that are highly magical and annoying
Mystic Warriors are the settings versions of Martial Artists
Skypoint is a huge city that floats over another city and is a military base of an enemy force in the game world. They have giant crystal lasers that can destroy the world's equivalent of battleships. _________________ So's Your Face! |

Hey! I'm in the process of getting the lowdown (pages 21-40) of the setting as it sounds like* it would be just about damn perfect for D&D 4E...which is especially awesome because they (RedBrick) are coming out with what is essentially an Earthdawn D&D 4E setting book, Age of Legends 4e.

Earthdawn is the greatest game ever, well at least I like it a lot, best fantasy meta-plot IMO! 1ed is near about perfect though with a few additions from some of Living Room Games books it becomes even better. Redbrick watered down the power level IMO. _________________ So's Your Face! |

Bought it at Bookstar, and remember it being tough to get into at first, and then really really fun after a few sessions.
But I lost the book (probably stolen at school) and never found another copy. _________________ Alright, so I fucked her. What of it? -- Dr. Venture |

I've said it many times... D&D 4e reads like a d20 Earthdawn.
However, if I may make a suggestion regarding knockbacks?
Points of damage up to the targets strength (normal PS for SDC damage, supernatural/robotic for MDC damage) do not cause knockback. For every point exceeding their PS, knockback is 4 inches (nothing if successfully rolled with).
Thus, if I have a PS of 10, and get shot by a 9mm for 9 points of damage, I'm fine. If I get shot for 12 points of damage, it rocks me back a bit less than a foot... a strong enough hit to shove me back.
If I have a supernatural PS of 20, and get hit by a mini-missile for 40 damage, I get knocked back 20*4 or 80 inches... a bit under 7 feet. If I have a regular PS of 20, I get knocked back 40*4, or 160 inches... about 13 feet. Why? Because I can't fight an explosion that powerful. _________________ Dr. Otto Octavius: I will not die a monster. |
